Peach County approves four-day school week

FORT VALLEY —The Peach County Board of Education, after a long discussion, gave approval Tuesday to a four-day school week this academic year.Superintendent Susan Clark said the move was necessitated by last week’s announcement from Gov. Sonny Perdue that school systems would lose even more state funding this year.Student instructional time will be the same as a regular school year, Clark said, and recess and break times would be at the discretion of the teacher.Board Vice Chairman Jamie Johnson said he wanted an assessment of the setup after the first semester ends in December, adding that “I support this because our staff says they can do it.”The resolution, not a policy, states the duration of the four-day schedule will depend on the economic situation locally and in the nation. “Our children’s education is foremost and change can be a scary thing,” said board member Ben McDaniel. “We’ll have to do more with less, and that may be the way of the future.”Board members Virginia Dixon and Kay Whitley were out of town.
