A tractor-trailer carrying about 51,000 pounds of frozen chicken overturned, closing a section of Ga. 96 in Peach County for about six hours Tuesday, a state trooper said.
Georgia State Patrol Sgt. Leamon Hughes said the driver told troopers that he was headed eastbound on Ga. 96 when he lost control of the tractor-trailer while attempting to avoid hitting a vehicle in front of him that had stopped to turn left onto Housers Mill Road. The tractor-trailer went off the south shoulder of the road and overturned, Hughes said. A crane had to be brought in to get the tractor-trailer righted.
The driver, Cecil Delainey McSwain, 61, of Jacksonville, Fla., was not injured. The tractor-trailer was owned by Drayage Express Inc. and was bound for Jacksonville the trooper said.
Ga. 96 was closed in both directions near Housers Mill Road from the 4:30 p.m. accident for about six hours, Hughes said. There were periods of time when the traffic was routed to one lane around the accident but for the most part, it remained closed, he said.
