The Perry City Council voted Tuesday night to hire two additional firefighters for the Department of Public Safety.
The decision came about due to the overtime that was being paid to staff two trucks with three firefighters each for three shifts. The current number of shift workers is 16.
In fiscal 2009, the city has paid between $5,044 and $7,057 in overtime since July. City Manager Lee Gilmour said the hiring of two additional officers would save the city $24,000 annually.
The City Council also approved an ordinance that calls for revoking a business owner’s alcohol license if the business violates local and state gambling laws. Gilmour said a specific target of the ordinance are establishments that have gaming machines such as video poker.
