A Macon-Bibb County firefighter collapsed after a run Monday near Lake Tobesofkee.
Sgt. Brian Sauls was fortunate that the two firefighters with him knew exactly what to do when he went into cardiac arrest.
“When he got back in the truck, he slumped over,” Macon-Bibb Fire Chief Marvin Riggins said.
Firefighters Tyler May and Mark Alston were with the 47-year-old Sauls, who was promoted earlier this year.
“They stopped the vehicle, called for help, did CPR and got the defibrillator and shocked him,” Riggins said. “They did a fine job. They did a heroic effort.”
Sauls regained consciousness and was taken to the hospital.
After a heart catheter revealed problems with Sauls’ heart, he went into surgery and had five bypasses, the chief said.
By Tuesday morning, Sauls was smiling and talking while Riggins visited.
“I have no doubt in my mind that they saved his life,” Riggins said.
