The City Council voted unanimously this week to approve job descriptions for directors of its new public works department and its new building, planning and zoning department.
The city is creating the two departments, and new directorships, from what was one single department.
Billy McDaniel, director of the previous single department, is set to remain as head of the public works department.
With a new job description in place for a building, planning and zoning department director, Councilman Michael Chidester said the city will begin work immediately to find someone to fill the job.
But until someone is found, McDaniel will continue overseeing operations as interim director, the council decided.
While creating the two new primary job descriptions, the council also created the position of assistant public works director. The council also amended numerous job descriptions in each department to accurately reflect whom employees should report to now that the original department has been split.
In other business, the council:
▪ Awarded a contract to Pyles Plumbing and Utility of Macon for the city’s $1.6 million master sewer improvement project at a main lift station just off Ga. 49, behind Jeff Smith Ford;
▪ Approved spending up to $15,000 from city reserve funds to make up the difference between special purpose local option sales tax money and other designated funding for an estimated $72,000 remodeling project at the old City Hall building;
▪ Approved adding one pole and four street lights on Chapman Road. The pole will cost $374, and the lights will cost $13 a month to operate.
