A 3-year-old drowned at a family gathering at Lake Sinclair on Saturday, Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said.
Deputies responded to the call about 5:45 p.m. and found that Aiden Elliott of Phenix City, Alabama, had fallen off a raft where several children were playing.
“It was a matter of minutes before anyone realized he was gone,” Sills said.
Family members tried “valiantly” to resuscitate the young boy, Sills said, but Aiden was dead on arrival at Putnam General Hospital.
No alcohol or other factors that would indicate foul play were found on the scene.
“It just appears to be a tragic accident,” Sills said.
