Macon pedestrian struck and killed on Pio Nono Avenue

A 62-year-old Macon woman died Wednesday afternoon when she was hit by a vehicle on Pio Nono Avenue.

Velma Jackson, of Sandra Fay Drive in Macon, was pronounced dead at 2:45 p.m., Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said.

According to witness statements, Jackson and her 23-year-old son, who was not hit, were attempting to cross the street from the U Save It Pharmacy toward Spencer Circle.

A black car in the right lane heading north stopped to allow the pair to cross.

The driver of a 1984 Chevrolet Impala, a 25-year-old man, moved into the left lane to pass the black car and struck and killed Jackson.

Although severe weather was in the area, it had not rained there, Jones said.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident, which has closed part of the road near O’Reilly’s Auto Parts and the Gold Cup Bowling Alley, Jones said.

No charges have been filed, but the case remains under investigation.

The Bibb County Coroner’s Office has not yet decided whether an autopsy will be performed.
