Military unit disposes of ordnance turned in to High Falls fire station

A military unit examined and disposed of a piece of ordnance delivered to the High Falls fire station Friday.

The ordnance, brought to the fire station about 1:15 p.m., was about six inches long with a conical nose and was 3 to 4 inches in diameter, according to a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The military unit estimated it to be from the Civil War era, according to a later news release.

The man who turned in the ordnance said he took possession of it after it was found in Jonesboro while digging for a sewer line. He said it had been in his home three or four years, the release states.

The fire station originally called the Bibb County Bomb Disposal Unit, but because it is suspected military ordnance, military authorities were contacted.
