Monroe Sheriff’s Office examining school superintendent’s electronic devices

Monroe County authorities are examining three electronic devices issued to school Superintendent Anthony Pack to see whether they were tampered with or contained material they shouldn’t have, the sheriff said.

Monroe County Sheriff John Cary Bittick said Wednesday that school board Chairman J. Ray Grant asked the sheriff’s office to look at an iPhone, an iPad and a desktop computer that were issued to Pack. Bittick wouldn’t comment on what prompted the request or say why Grant asked for it.

Attempts to reach Pack Wednesday were unsuccessful.

Grant said, “The reason they’re being looked at is we requested that they be looked at to be sure there had been no improper use of a school device ... and that it had not been, in some way, compromised from the outside.”

Grant said he didn’t want to speculate on the case and would wait on the outcome of the sheriff’s investigation.

Bittick said investigators are now looking at the devices, and he isn’t sure when he will have results.

Monroe County school system attorney Cory Kirby said an email sent to Grant prompted the chairman to ask Bittick to examine the equipment. Kirby said he didn’t know what was said in the email or who sent it.

School board member Eva Bilderback said she couldn’t comment, except to say that the board hasn’t met yet about the situation and that the board would let the investigation take its course.

“We want to make sure everything is done correctly,” she said. “We want to find the truth. ... We’re going to let them do their job and go from there.”
