A house fire claimed the life of a Monroe County woman Tuesday.
Stephanie Naulta, 34, died in the fire, which was reported just after 11:30 a.m. at a home on Big Buck Trail near High Falls State Park.
“For some reason, she was in her bedroom but unable to get out,” said Coroner Joey Proctor. “I don’t know the reasons or circumstances that she wasn’t able to get out.”
Proctor noted that three other people, later confirmed as Naulta’s family members, were able to escape the fire. Autopsy results are pending.
Shane Cook, public information officer for the Monroe County Fire Department, said the fire was not officially ruled accidental, but that is likely.
“There was a wood-burning stove that was the cause of the fire,” he said.
Cook described the house as a “total loss” despite a two-minute response time by the initial firefighting crew.
“There’s nothing left standing,” he said.
