Amia Washington is going to Disney World.
The 14-year-old from Warner Robins has spent much of the past five years in and out of hospitals with a wide range of medical issues. For the past six months, Amia and her mom, Brandy Harris, have been residents at the Rescue Mission of Middle Georgia’s Dove Center, a residential program for female victims of domestic violence and their children.
When readers of the Reindeer Gang learned Amia had never been on a vacation — much less, Disney World — they stepped forward with $1,800 in donations. The rest of the cost of the $3,000 trip will be funded by private donors through the Rescue Mission’s board of directors. Amia will make trip with her mother, brother and sister.
Erin Reimers, executive director of the Rescue Mission, said Amia is scheduled to have surgery in early January to have her colon removed, so the family will have to wait before they can plan for the trip.
