A Bibb County deputy spotted flames shooting from a two-story building off Napier Avenue at about 5:15 a.m. Thursday.
Macon-Bibb firefighters rushed to Mercer Street, where they found the fire eating away at the corner of a wooden apartment building behind a boarding house at 3996 Napier Ave.
“I’m calling it a set fire because there are no utilities,” said Sgt. Ben Gleaton, a Macon-Bibb fire investigator. “It looks like it was set under the (outside) stairwell.”
The charred exterior of the left corner of the building shows how the fire spread. The flames got into the top floor and damaged the upstairs kitchen, Gleaton said.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire and searched the building to make sure no one was inside.
Mercer Street was blocked by fire engines near the corner of Napier, where traffic was moving smoothly.
It was not immediately clear if anyone had been living there.
