Smoke from a controlled burn gone awry caused heavy smoke to drift across Interstate 16 near Bullard Road beginning at about 2:30 p.m. Friday, according to the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office.
Chief Deputy Billy Boney said wind caused fire from a controlled burn on the east side of the interstate to spread the fire into nearby woods.
Authorities slowed traffic in the area to keep cars from colliding and motorists from injuring firefighters and other emergency personnel, Boney said.
The fire was contained, and most of the smoke was cleared by 5 p.m.
Boney still advised motorists to take care when driving in the area.
