A Monroe County man who died in his vehicle Dec. 8 was identified as John W. Smith, 78, by the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta, a Monroe County sheriff’s news release stated.
According to the release, Smith called 911 after he became trapped inside his 2005 Lexus. By the time emergency personnel and deputies arrived on the scene, the car was completely engulfed in flames. Smith’s remains were identified by dental records and a serial number on a knee replacement.
Monroe County officials had declined to release any information about the incident before the GBI’s positive identification this week.
The case, including the cause of the fire, remains under investigation, but no foul play is suspected, according to the release.
