The body of a 19-year-old drowning victim was recovered from the Ocmulgee River in Monroe County, according to a release sent out at 12:36 a.m. Sunday by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The man drowned about noon Saturday while tubing down the river with his girlfriend. Rescue crews spent much of Saturday searching for the body.
The name of the victim was not available early Sunday, according to the release.
The victim, who was not wearing a life vest, left his inner tube and tried to swim to the boat landing at Popes Ferry Road when he went under the water. His girlfriend tried to save him, to no avail.
The body was sent to the GBI crime lab.
