Rescue workers are looking for a 19-year-old man who apparently drowned Saturday while tubing in the Ocmulgee River near Popes Ferry in Monroe County.
According to a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the man and his girlfriend put their inner tubes in the river Saturday morning at Dames Ferry, where Ga. 18 crosses the Ocmulgee. The tubes were tied together but became separated by the time the couple floated to Popes Ferry.
The victim left his tube and tried to swim to the boat ramp at Popes Ferry Road. He was not wearing a life vest. His girlfriend tried to rescue him, to no avail. Emergency services received a call about the accident about noon.
The name of the apparent victim is being withheld by authorities pending notification of his next of kin.
The Monroe Sheriff’s Office, the Macon-Bibb County Rescue Dive Team, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and other agencies were trying to locate the man Saturday evening.
