A 30-year-old Laurens County man drowned Monday in a pond near Ga. 278 and Interstate 16.
An autopsy performed Tuesday confirmed drowning was the cause of death for Marcus Smith, of Montrose, said Deputy Coroner Nathan Stanley.
Authorities were called to the pond at about 3:40 p.m. Monday. Smith’s friends said a group had been fishing in a pontoon boat, but the boat got stuck, Stanley said. Smith got out of the boat to push the vessel free since the others couldn’t swim.
“He went down and didn’t come up,” Smith said.
Laurens County Fire and EMA Director Don Bryant said immediate attempts to locate Smith’s body were unsuccessful, but a fire department diver was able to find him later Monday.
