The mother of the toddler who died Friday after being left in a van for hours was identified Monday by Monroe County officials as India Chatmon.
Chatmon, 23, left her son Joseph Chatmon restrained in his child safety seat while she went to work at Samuel E. Hubbard Elementary School in Forsyth, according to a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. He was left in the seat from Friday morning until late that afternoon.
Joseph was pronounced dead at 5:40 p.m. Friday. The sheriff’s office originally put the boy’s age at 18 months but reported his age Monday as 21 months old.
According to the news release, Chatmon discovered the toddler in the van Friday afternoon and rushed him to the Monroe County Hospital’s emergency room, calling 911 along the way. The Chatmon family lives in Douglas County, according to the release.
The death is still under investigation by the sheriff’s office. The body was sent to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur for an autopsy.
