Sentence reduced for Macon man in murder trial

The prison sentence has been reduced for an 18-year-old Macon man who testified in a 2009 murder trial.

Derek Perkins, of Newberg Avenue, initially was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison on aggravated assault charges related to the death of 40-year-old Ozzie Jackson Jr. His sentence was reduced to eight years in prison with seven years on probation Thursday, said his attorney Michael Chidester.

Prosecutor John Regan said the sentence was reduced because he testified in court proceedings for his co-defendants in the murder.
