Man shot in Crawford hunting accident

A Byron man was accidentally shot in the abdomen Saturday during a hunting trip in Crawford County, the sheriff’s office said.

Kevin Knighton, 30, was accidentally shot by 46-year-old Gregory Wade at a hunting spot off Ga. 128 west of Roberta, according to a news release from Crawford County Sheriff Lewis Walker. A call to the sheriff’s office to report the shooting and to ask for help was received just after 7 a.m. Saturday.

Wade was trying to remove a hunting rifle from his pickup when it fired, the release said. The bullet went through the truck’s passenger door and struck Knighton, who was standing outside the truck.

Wade, also of Byron, drove Knighton to the sheriff’s office, where he was immediately taken by ambulance to The Medical Center of Central Georgia. Knighton has since been released from the hospital, and no charges are expected.
