Autopsy of Dodge County boy could take months

It could take months before Dodge County authorities know what caused the death of a 10-year-old boy.

The boy, Randall Ikedionwu, collapsed and died Tuesday night at the Eastman-Dodge County Recreation Department.

He had been playing in a soccer game for about five minutes, Dodge County Coroner Joe Smith said. At one point, he came to the sideline and told his dad that he couldn’t catch his breath. He collapsed moments later.

A nurse at the game began CPR on the child immediately. Dodge County Emergency Medical Services and the Eastman Fire Department, along with deputies from the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office, rushed to the field.

The child was taken to the Dodge County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later, the sheriff’s office reported.

The boy’s body was taken to the state crime lab in Atlanta, where an autopsy will be performed, Smith said. It could take three to four months, however.

The boy had no known medical conditions, the coroner said.

“He was a perfect child,” Smith said. “It’s just a tragedy.”
