Two men die in wreck on I-16

Two Atlanta men were killed Thursday in a traffic crash on Interstate 16 in Laurens County, about a mile east of the State Route 257 exit, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Senior Trooper Keith Gundy said 54-year-old Miguel Ruis Vazques, of Norcross, and 33-year-old Edwin Jesus Salas, of Duluth, were traveling westbound in a Toyota Tacoma about 7:20 a.m. when the truck hydroplaned and crossed the median.

An eastbound tractor-trailer driven by 41-year-old Stephen Weeks of Waltersboro, S.C., broadsided the Tacoma on the passenger side, killing both men in the Tacoma, he said.

Gundy said Weeks was treated at Fairview Park Hospital and was released this morning. His name was not immediately available.

Heavy rain was reported at the time of the crash, he said.
