Veterans displaced from the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville last fall will hold a car wash fundraiser Friday and Saturday.
The money will go to a group that sprang up after the move, mandated by state budget cuts, to help veterans find and furnish new places to live. Car washes will be free, but donations will be accepted, organizer Clarence Butts said.
The car wash will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday at O’Reilly Auto Parts, 1681 N. Columbia St., Milledgeville, Butts said. Veterans and cadets from Georgia Military College will do the washing, he said.
About 80 veterans had to leave the war veterans home last year when a two-floor domicilliary was closed to save the state money. Many of the displaced found new places to live in the Milledgeville area, and they formed a support group, of which Butts is a member.
