Tequita Jackson and her six children are seeking shelter after a fire early Tuesday morning damaged the home they were renting in east Macon.
Jackson already was headed to work with her three youngest children when she got the call her house was on fire at 3211 Masseyville Road, she said.
The fire started shortly before 6:30 a.m. in the kitchen and her three oldest children ages 13, 14 and 15 were able to escape and seek shelter at a neighbor’s house, Jackson said.
Teranesha Smith, 14, said she thought her sister was joking when she first told her about the fire, but they got out the front door without anyone getting hurt.

The house sustained heavy damage in the kitchen and smoke damage throughout the one-story building.
The American Red Cross agreed to pay for lodging for two nights at a local motel but after that Jackson said she is not sure where she will go.
The family did not have renters insurance to replace the items damaged in the blaze.
