The deadline to apply for property tax exemption status will change Jan. 1, 2010.
Starting Jan. 1, property owners who wish to apply for an exemption must do so before March 1 of the tax year the exemption is sought for, the Macon-Bibb County Board of Tax Assessors voted Monday.
Currently, applications for exemptions may be filed at any time for any tax year.
The new policy will make it easier for assessors to treat property owners fairly when considering their requests for exemption, said Kevin Brown, the board’s attorney.
