Income tax filers who planned to mail their tax returns just before the midnight deadline today already should have the necessary postage on the envelope.
The United States Postal Service will close the lobby at the main post office at 8 p.m., spokeswoman Nancy Clark said. It is the only post office open late today. In the past, the lobby at the main post office at 451 College St. has remained open until midnight April 15 so patrons could get their envelopes weighed and stamped.
However, all envelopes with proper postage deposited before midnight in the collection boxes at the College Street Post Office — on both the College Street side and the Hardeman Street sides of the building — will be postmarked with today’s date, Clark said.
People who don’t have the correct postage after 8 p.m. may use the automated, 24-hour, postage center in the Zebulon Post Office at 7040 Peake Road, she said. But envelopes still must be deposited in the College Street collection boxes to get an April 15 postmark.
