Macon council members push diabetes screening

City Council members Nancy White, Ed DeFore and Charles Jones on Tuesday urged people to get tested for diabetes, and announced the start of the Medicare Diabetes Screening Project in Macon, according to a news release.

Planned activities include reaching out to Macon physicians to inform them of Medicare diabetes screening benefits, educational seminars at local senior centers, outreach to members of the public through churches and public service announcements.

“When diabetes is undiagnosed and untreated, it can be devastating, and new government statistics show that our senior citizens are especially vulnerable,” White, a registered nurse, said in the release.

“That’s why it is crucial that we create awareness of the benefits that Medicare offers for diabetes screening and motivate our seniors to ask their health-care providers about being tested for diabetes.”
