Gunman chases victims inside hotel, where fight leads to gunfire

Two men banged on hotel guests’ doors late Thursday as a gunman was following them.

Just after 10:50 p.m., Bibb County sheriff’s deputies were called to the Palm Tree Inn extended stay hotel at 2690 Riverside Drive, according to 911 dispatch reports.

Jakari Phelps, 17, and Willie Phelps, 22, who are related, were both shot in the left leg while inside the hotel, which is near Burrus Road and within sight of Interstate 75, according to a sheriff’s news release.

Jakari Phelps stays at the hotel, where he and his relative met out front Thursday when a man came up to them.

The Phelpses said they could not identify the man, who said something to them that prompted them to run toward the front door.

The gunman followed, got into a fight and struck Jakari Phelps in the head with the gun before he fired shots.

The shooter ran away.

He was described as a black man about 5 feet 10 inches tall who was wearing a dark jumpsuit, glasses and black hat.

The Phelpses, whose relation was not immediately clear, were taken to the Medical Center, Navicent Health, with injuries that did not appear to be life threatening.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call for a sheriff’s investigator at 877-68-CRIME or phone anonymous tips to Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 877-68-CRIME.
