A neighbor banging on the window of a burning house saved three men late Thursday.

Macon-Bibb County firefighters responded to a report of an attic blaze just before 11:30 p.m. at 467 Pittman St.

“It was already going pretty good” when firefighters arrived, Battalion Chief Tim Johnson said. “It was definitely burning up high.”

As the flames shot through the roof, three adult men were roused from their beds by the neighbor. The men found heavy smoke throughout the house when they woke up.

“It was kind of a tough one to put out. It was an older house with a lot of fat lighter,” Johnson said.

The house sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage.

The residents said they had a smoke detector, but Johnson said it was the neighbor who saved their lives.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but an investigator plans to be back on the scene Friday morning.
