‘Everybody survived this,’ says Houston County sheriff’s deputy of train-car crash

A train stuck a car crossing the railroad tracks Thursday at West Houston Drive near its intersection with Ga. 247.

No “visible injuries” were observed of the three people — including a 9-year-old — who were in the car when it was struck at 1:42 p.m., said Houston County sheriff’s Capt. Ronnie Harlowe.

“They were outside the car walking and talking when deputies arrived,” said Harlowe, head of the sheriff’s patrol division. “In a train vs. a car crash, it can be bad. But everybody survived this.”

Linwood Harris, 39, of Kathleen, was driving a 2000 Honda Accord when he attempted to cross the tracks and pulled into the path of the southbound Norfolk Southern Railroad train, Harlowe said.

Houser and his passengers were taken to Houston Medical Center to be checked out as a precaution, Harlowe said.

The crash remains under investigation, Harlowe said.
