JoAnn Wilder, owner of Proud 2B Polite, a mobile business; 478-461-6870; www.proud2bpolite.com
How long have you been in business?: Wilder has been in business about two years.
“I started teaching etiquette and social skill classes because I really felt it was something really needed. I enjoy working with children, so I came up with the curriculum to teach children, and it started from there.”
What do you like best about your job?: “Just the reward of the children. ... One little boy told me, ‘I told my dad that Miss JoAnn said we shouldn’t use the cellphone at the table. ... My dad said OK and put the phone down.’ ” But Wilder told the boy that sometimes adults have to take care of business calls at the table.
“I had no idea he would call his dad out on it.”
What is your specialty?: She teaches children ages 6-12 with classes on different topics such as sportsmanship, leadership, etiquette, how to set a table and manners. She also teaches children how to feel confident and respect themselves and others.
“I have curriculum I use ... every week is a different topic. We have classes for four to eight weeks, but parents may chose to go longer. Usually a minimum of four weeks but I have classes set up for up to 12 weeks.
What are your future plans?: “I just started sewing classes two months ago ... and I hope to expand it. It’s for ages 7-17. ... I’m looking to get my own facility in the next month or two.”
