Clay Hargraves, owner, Bates Roofing LLC, 4168 Broadway, 478-788-6208.
How long have you been in business?: The business started about 47 years ago. When owner Tommy Bates died in 2010, his wife was no longer interested in operating the business, and Hargraves bought it in 2012.
“I’ve worked here 15 years. I started working here in 2000, and I was a project manager when Mr. Bates died.”
What do you like best about your job?: “I’ve never been scared of heights. I always like being on top of roofs -- there is a lot of freedom up there. ... I feel I have the best of both worlds. I can be outside ... or working inside on my paperwork.”
What is your specialty?: “We do commercial, industrial and institutional roofing. ... We do everything from the gutters and downspouts to the coping caps that’s installed. ... That finishes off the building. It gives it an artistic look. ... We do tons of repair work.”
What are your future plans?: “I hope I have bettered the company, that we have grown, that we have more employees and that we are doing more business. I hope we have new relationships and customers.”
