Hart’s Mortuary and Crematory has opened in Gray -- its second branch outside its downtown Macon facility.
Hart’s Mortuary, Jones County Chapel, held its grand opening this month at 307 Pecan Lane, just off Gray Highway near Lite-N-Tie Road, President Milton Heard IV, said.
“It’s a growing county, and we thought it would benefit from our services,” Heard said.
Hart’s bought a shopping center where there was a church, restaurant and a beauty salon, he said.

The funeral home anchors the shopping center. Petals Flowers of Gray moved in next door about three weeks ago, and the restaurant, El Sombrero Mexican Grill, is the only business that remains from the shopping center, Heard said.
“We completely gutted our whole area, to the roof and walls,” he said.
The floor plan is similar to Hart’s at the Cupola, which opened on Peake Road in Macon in 2008, he said.
“It’s a very open-space facility,” he said. “It has a coffee shop in it ... and a warming kitchen.”
Some local organizations have already used the building for meetings and luncheons, he said.
Hart’s was founded in Macon in 1899 and built its current downtown facility on Cherry Street in 1931.
