A timber company received unanimous approval Monday to cut all the trees on a large tract of land at the intersection of Barnes Ferry and Sofkee roads in south Bibb County.
The Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission approved a conditional-use application to allow the timber harvest at 2048 Barnes Ferry Road.
The applicant, Timberland Management & Realty, plans to cut the timber on a 79.34-acre tract that contains planted loblolly pines with smaller hardwoods and brush. The property is zoned agricultural and industrial.
Mark Gibbs, owner of Timberland Management, assured Chairwoman Sarah Gerwig-Moore that the company would follow best forestry management practices.
“I would lose my license if I don’t do that,” Gibbs said.
Peg Jones, president of Save Our Rivers Inc. in Macon, said she didn’t oppose the plan, but she wanted to caution the timber company to be careful and protect any creeks and rivers.
“We just don’t want any more sediment going in the river,” Jones said.
The property would be cleared of all timber except for the buffers. A 50-foot uncut buffer is planned along the northern and western property lines and along 2020 Barnes Ferry Road.
Property to the north is zoned single-family residential and agricultural. Other adjacent property is zoned agricultural or industrial.
An application to rezone the same property from agricultural district to a wholesale and light industrial district is scheduled to be heard in March. Epic Midstream, a Texas-based independent liquid bulk storage and logistics solutions provider, plans to build a rail spur and a pipeline loading station.
