Macon should see a chain restaurant built downtown this year.
Nick Patel said during Monday’s planning and zoning meeting that he is looking to put Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches at 652 New St. on the corner of Plum Street Lane.
“We want to cater to the hospital -- they are a nice client -- and to downtown and to Mercer as well,” Patel said.
Plans are to demolish the existing structure on the site and construct a two-story, 4,400-square-foot building. The new structure will feature the 2,000-square-foot restaurant on the first floor with two loft apartments on the second floor.
The Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission approved Patel’s conditional-use permit for the mixed-use building as well as a variance for parking. Patel said he expects most customers would walk to the restaurant from the hospital and other nearby businesses.
This will be the Illinois-based chain’s third midstate location. Jimmy John’s has a restaurant on Forsyth Road in Macon and on Watson Boulevard in Warner Robins.
