Unemployment rate up in Macon

The Georgia Department of Labor reported Thursday that the preliminary unadjusted unemployment rate in the metro Macon area rose to 10.3 percent in July, up from a revised 10.1 percent in June.

In Macon, the number of unemployed workers increased in July to 11,649, up 4,090 from July 2008. The number of payroll jobs in metro Macon was 96,500, a loss of 5,200 or 5.1 percent from July 2008.

The preliminary unemployment rate in the metro Warner Robins area was unchanged at 7.6 percent from June to July. In Warner Robins, the number of unemployed workers increased in July to 5,211, up 1,351 from July 2008. The number of payroll jobs in metro Warner Robins was 57,600, a loss of 1,000 or 1.7 percent from July 2008.

Statewide, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 10.3 percent in July, up from a revised 10.1 percent in June. Last month, 493,748 unemployed Georgians were looking for work, an increase of 63.6 percent from July 2008.
