More places to pump in north Macon

A new convenience store at the corner of Northside Drive and Forest Hill Road could help spur development in the north Macon neighborhood, a zoning board official said Monday.

The Macon-Bibb County Planning and Zoning Commission approved a conditional-use application for a proposed Circle K store at 4001 Northside Drive. The 5,400-square-foot store, which would be located by the shopping center with Food Depot, would have 10 fuel pumps.

Chairman Kamal Azar complimented the building’s stone and brick veneer design, adding that with additional landscaping it could become a much needed addition to the area.

“This is really crucial corner,” he said. “We’ve been looking for something to go on that side of town.”

A building that housed three different restaurants on that corner sat vacant for more than 10 years before it was demolished in 2015. Beginning in the late 1990s, it was Beaches Grill & Bar, Beaches of Macon and Jeneane’s at Northside.

The commission also approved a parking variance because the store would remove some of the spaces available in the shopping center.
