TailsSpin, the winner of the Macon Mogul contest, opened its pet store Tuesday in downtown Macon at 570 Mulberry St.
Co-owner Jusak Yang Bernard said the store has been well-received during its first day of business.
“It’s been great,” he said between helping customers. “Everyone has been really supportive.”
Customer Andrew Smith said he’s been waiting for the opening. He switched the food he gives to his two dogs with Hi-Tek, a brand sold at TailsSpin. “A pet store is good for the community,” he said.

The store offers high-end quality food and supplies for dogs and cats. Customer Joana McGowen works next door to the 3,000-square-foot store. “I watched the signs go up ... I’m excited,” she said after talking with an employee about TailsSpin’s variety of dog food.
The Gateway Macon Initiative, with funding from the Peyton Anderson Foundation, sponsored the Macon Mogul competition.
The competition’s $50,000 grand prize package included renovations and retail space for one year in downtown Macon, business startup professional services, media advertising schedules, coverage in Georgia Trend magazine, Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce membership and a grand opening ceremony.
TailsSpin was founded in 2007 in Savannah where it also has a store.
The Macon store will feature “Yappy Hour” on First Friday, 4 to 7 p.m. with free canine cocktails and treats and free wine, beer and Nu-Way hot dogs for the people.
