Macon man beaten on Elpis Street

Macon police are investigating an aggravated assault that took place Sunday afternoon at the 2800 block of Elpis Street, according to a news release.

Officers responded to a call of a person down. A friend of the victim told officers that Charles James Smith, 50, was jumped by several individuals on Elpis Street at about 12:20 p.m. Smith refused to call the police even though he apparently knew who attacked him, the report stated, and refused medical attention.

Smith instead went to sleep. A friend was unable to awaken Smith and called the Macon police, who found Smith unresponsive with two black eyes and other injuries. Smith was taken to The Medical Center of Central Georgia, where he was in surgery Sunday night.
