No charges forthcoming in Culloden girl’s death

No charges are expected to be filed in the accidental shooting death of a 6-year-old Monroe County girl.

Jenn Stanovich was shot accidentally by her 13-year-old brother early Tuesday morning, according to a report from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched to the residence on Ga. 42 South in Culloden about 12:20 a.m. and arrived within 15 minutes. The victim’s father, Richard Stanovich, was holding his daughter while a volunteer firefighter and paramedic who are neighbors treated her.

Neither the boy nor the neighbors were named in the report.

Richard Stanovich told a deputy that he and his mother, Lynda, were in the kitchen when they heard a shot. As Richard Stanovich ran to the back of the house, he was met in the hallway by his daughter, who was bleeding. He held his daughter while waiting for help.

Jenn Stanovich was taken to The Medical Center of Central Georgia, where she died later from a chest wound. An autopsy was performed at the GBI crime lab Wednesday.

The boy told deputies he had come back inside the house after hunting armadillos in the backyard.

He went into his bedroom and tried to clear and unload the rifle, then laid it on the bed.

He knocked the rifle to the floor accidently, and a single shot discharged, striking his sister while she stood in the doorway talking to him.

The boy showed deputies two .22-caliber rifles, one of which discharged.
