Office staff members at Porter Elementary School are back at the school Wednesday afternoon after a small fire.
The fire started while a contractor was working on the roof, which led to a building evacuation for about an hour and a half, officials said.
Employees from Alan Frank Roofing were applying tar to Porter’s roof, when a piece of lumber caught fire about 11:15 a.m. after making contact with the tar, said David Gowan, Bibb school system’s director of risk management.
Gowan said the roofers quickly put out the fire with dry powder, and he commended them for their response.

Smoke got into a vent of the school’s air conditioning system, setting off an alarm and prompting response from the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department and Bibb school campus police.
There were no injuries, nor damage to the building, and only administrators and office staff were working Wednesday, Gowan said. However, the school system will work with Rainbow International Restoration and Cleaning Systems to air out the building with ozone and misting machines.
