Macon Mayor Robert Reichert and Bibb County Board of Commissioners Chairman Sam Hart gave upbeat assessments of the coming year to a joint meeting of Macon’s three Rotary Clubs at noon Wednesday.
They presented last November’s passage of the special purpose local option sales tax as a huge advantage for local governments, but said how they handle transfer of about 100 city employees in five departments to the county will determine how citizens view prospects for a consolidated metropolitan government.
A vote on unification could come as early as fall 2012, Reichert said.
Both men said they’re committed to treating transferred employees fairly, but gave few specifics. Hart said they’re waiting on an actuarial study of the financial impact on employee benefits.
