A Sons of Confederate Veterans group plans to erect a new monument on the Griswoldville battlefield site in Jones County.
Construction of the Georgia granite obelisk monument is a project of the Gen. Edward Dorr Tracy camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The monument, which will be 14 feet tall, will memorialize the soldiers who fought and died at the site.
The monument will include the names of the Confederate units that fought at Griswoldville as well as memorial emblems of the Confederate States of America and the old Georgia seal.
“We’ve gotten a huge amount of interest,” said Martin N. Bell, who is spearheading fund raising for the monument.
Ground breaking for the project, estimated to cost about $30,000, was held Saturday afternoon.
The project is moving ahead with financial support from the Georgia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The state Department of Natural Resources is allowing the monument to be built on state grounds.
