A man attempted to rob a Telegraph newspaper hawker Sunday afternoon on the corner of Chambers Road at Walmart, authorities said.
According to witnesses, Ronnie Clements, 32, of Macon, was approached by the man about 1 p.m. as Clements was selling newspapers stacked in a grocery buggy, according to Sgt. Sean DeFoe, public information officer for the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, and a sheriff’s office news release.
The man attempted to grab a money bag from inside the buggy, but Clements grabbed it back, the release stated.
The man next pulled up his shirt and showed a handgun that was stuffed into his waistband.

Clements grabbed a large rock used to weigh the newspapers down in the buggy and defended himself by striking the man on the forehead, the release stated.
Clements hit the man hard enough that he may have left a mark or a scar, DeFoe said.
Meanwhile, a woman pulled up in a vehicle and yelled at the hawker not to strike the man again and that she was calling the sheriff’s office, according to DeFoe and the release.
The man took off on foot, running toward Avalon Gardens apartments across the street from where the hawker was set up, the release stated.
The suspect was described in the release as a dark skinned black male standing about 5 feet, 7 inches and weighing about 115 pounds. He had a short afro and was wearing all black clothing and had a black necklace, authorities said.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the sheriff’s office at (478) 746-9441.
