A Macon police officer has been charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old Houston County woman.
Officer Chris Campbell, 29, of Macon, resigned prior to being charged early Sunday with rape in connection with a Friday incident that allegedly occurred in the 4100 block of Pio Nono Avenue. Other charges may be pending, according to a Macon police statement.
Campbell, a three-year officer who was working in the patrol division, was on duty at the time of the alleged assault, police Sgt. Melanie Hofmann said.
Police have no knowledge of Campbell and the woman knowing each other. A sexual assault kit was used at the hospital, Police Chief Mike Burns said.

Hofmann said a criminal investigation and an internal affairs investigation were launched during the weekend.
Campbell was questioned Saturday and arrested just prior to 1 a.m. on Sunday, according to police.
He is being held at the Bibb County jail without bond and is scheduled to appear before a Superior Court judge Tuesday for a bond hearing, according to the statement.
