A Macon used car dealer was denied rezoning approval Monday for a satellite car lot on Log Cabin Drive.
Kegs Limited filed a rezoning application with the Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission to rezone 4885 Log Cabin Drive from a residential district to a commercial district. The classification would have allowed the applicant, James Hamp representing Kegs Limited, to operate a used car dealership and rental car agency on the property.
Kegs Limited currently operates a used car dealership at 222 Emery Highway and this would have been an expansion of that business.
The lot is large enough for 35 vehicles, but Hamp said, “I doubt we will max out at 35.”

But some commissioners voiced concern about the rezoning.
“It opens the door to more than I would like to see happen in this neighborhood,” Commissioner Jacqueline Hightower said.
Commissioner Sarah Gerwig-Moore agreed.
“This is primarily a residential neighborhood,” she said. “Once we rezone it, a sports bar could go in there,” which would not be compatible with a residential area.
The vote was 5-0 to deny the application.
The commission also denied an application for an electronic graphic sign -- with variances in sign area, sign location and distance requirements -- for Lawrence Drive Baptist Church at 5774 School Road.
Pastor Brad Marchman presented several letters from area residents who agreed with the proposed sign.
“We think it will be a great benefit for our church and a great benefit for the community,” Marchman said.
The electronic sign would have replaced a sign that has letters that have to be replaced manually. The new sign would allow the church to broadcast multiple events that may be going on at one time.
But commissioners said the proposed sign did not meet the new regulations for electronic signs the board spent several months designing this year.
“We support what you are doing in the community,” Gerwig-Moore said. “But you don’t meet any of the special circumstances that we set. I don’t think we can break our own rules. ... We would not only have to discard our sign rules, but discard our variances.”
The commission voted 4-1 to deny the application with Commissioner Arthur Hubbard voting to approve.
