An active search for a new chief executive officer of Houston Healthcare likely will begin around the first of the year, the chairman of the system board said Wednesday.
“We have not done anything for it at the present time,” Sonny Watson, chairman of the Houston Healthcare System Inc. board, said following the group’s regular meeting.
Interim CEO Cary Martin has asked to be considered for the position, Watson said. Martin has been acting as CEO since May when the board fired former CEO Grady W. “Skip” Philips without cause.
Earlier in the meeting, the board unanimously adopted changes to its bylaws. Among those changes was that the board now has to approve vice president appointments recommended by the CEO.

As a result of that change, the board affirmed the current vice president positions following the recommendation of Martin, who also serves as vice president and chief operating officer.
Also at the meeting, the board named the building located at 1553 Watson Blvd., Warner Robins, after longtime board member Glynn Greenway. The building currently houses Houston County EMS and the Information Technology department.
