Hughes defeats Hinson for Houston BOE seat

Helen Hughes won a special non-partisan election runoff Tuesday for the Houston County Board of Education Post 5 seat.

Hughes received 1,094 votes to defeat Randall Hinson, who received 942 votes.

Hughes has held the seat since being appointed to replace Pamela Greenway, who died of cancer in March 2009.

Hughes initially faced three challengers. She received the most votes in the July 20 election, but failed to get the more than 50 percent required to avoid a runoff. Hinson received the second-most votes, and the others running for the seat - Marsha McGowan Hall and Darin Rase - endorsed Hinson in the runoff.
