Southeastern Region softball: South Carolina tops Alabama

WARNER ROBINS - South Carolina (Blue Ridge) defeated Alabama (Phenix City) 7-1 in a Little League Softball Southeastern Region Tournament pool play game Saturday.

In the top of the first, Alabama's Kelby Hall was hit by a pitch, took second and third, then scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.

In the bottom of the first, South Carolina's Taylor Justice crushed an inside-the-park home run to deep right field to even the score, 1-1.

South Carolina scored on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead, then tacked on another run in the third and two more in the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Daisy Byrd scored for South Carolina after forcing a series of rundowns. She was interfered with on the basepaths on the last one, and was awarded home for a 6-1 lead. Ansley Gilreath drove in another run on a bloop single to shallow center field to make it 7-1.

South Carolina plays in the first consolation game on Sunday at noon against Virginia. Alabama will play in the 2:30 p.m. consolation game Sunday against Tennessee.
