Southeastern Region softball: North Carolina secures semifinal berth

WARNER ROBINS - North Carolina (Wilkes County) defeated South Carolina (Blue Ridge) 4-3 in a Little League Softball Southeastern Region Tournament pool play game Friday.

With the win, North Carolina guaranteed both itself and Warner Robins a spot in the semifinals, eliminating both South Carolina and Alabama.

North Carolina struck in the bottom of the first, as Kaitlyn Perry's groundout brought home Allison Mitchell for a 1-0 lead. Caitlin Shepherd made it 2-0 moments later on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the third, North Carolina added a run when Shepherd scored on a passed ball for a 3-0 lead.

South Carolina got on the board in the top of the fifth. Jordan Johnson scored from first on a pair of errors to make it 3-1.

In the top of the sixth, Samantha Pegg hit an RBI single to right-center field to cut the lead to 3-2, then advanced to third on a throwing error. She came home one batter later on a Daisy Byrd single to tie the game, 3-3.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Allison Mitchell scored from third on a passed ball to give North Carolina a 4-3 victory.

On Saturday, South Carolina (0-2) plays Alabama (0-2) at 1 p.m. North Carolina (2-0) plays Warner Robins American (2-0) at 7 p.m. in a game that will determine first and second place in Pool B.
